"...On the top of this bare crag the lighthouse-keeper's dwelling and fog signal stand out bold and sharp against the blue sky. At the east, a clump of blanched ledges stretches off... " -- Samuel Adams Drake, The Pine Tree Coast, 1891

Located on Cape Nedick, at the entrance to the York River, Nubble light has stood as an aid to navigation since 1879 and is popular tourist attraction for visitors to southern Maine. According to local legend, the bark Isadore - which ran aground and sunk on the rocky coast somewhat North of Cape Neddick in 1842, during the 50 years when local mariners petitioned Congress for funds for construction of a lighthouse - still appears as a ghost ship with a phantom crew.

Part of Nubble's "mystique" is that the island is accessible only at low tide or by boat and is not open to the public, leaving it to the viewer's imagination what it might be like to walk the ground and climb the 41 foot tower.
