Fort Seldon, NM

In 1865, during the post Civil War days of Westward expansion, troops from Albuquerque were ordered to Radium Springs, NM to begin construction of a new frontier outpost for the protection of nearby settlements. The site was a crossing point for caravans of Spanish traders and was an ancient Native American campground. Fort Seldon was constructed entirely of adobe and was home to two companies (one infantry, one cavalry) of Buffalo Soldiers.

In the early part of this century, young Douglas MacArthur spent several of his childhood years at Fort Seldon when his father was the fort's Commanding Officer.

Today the site is a popular tourist attraction and one cannot help but feel a sense of history viewing the ruins as they stand like sentinels in the New Mexico desert.
