Sharon has always had an interest in drawing & painting & spent many hours as a child absorbed in her coloring books & paint with water books. Unhappy with standard colors available in boxes of crayons, she'd often spend time layering and blending colors to produce just the right shade for depth or shadow. She taught herself to draw by tracing photos in magazines & newspapers to get the "feel" of how lines should flow to produce a certain shape or image. Her third grade teacher gave her a grade of "F" on a drawing project, a simple rabbit with carrot, stating "This had to be traced! No child in the 3rd grade can draw that well." Sharon had only basic art classes in high school & college, & did sketches, pastels, watercolors, & tempera painting to enhance project requirements. She graduated with a BA in Elementary Education, with minors in both Biology & Psychology, & for many years created artwork only for personal enjoyment, classroom use, or volunteer efforts . After moving to NH 1988, she began classes at two local ceramics studios, & her pieces were sold in several gift shops throughout NH. Several of her creations won first and second place awards in their categories at the Granite State Ceramics Association show. In addition to ceramic pieces, she also offered a variety of painted wooden & fabric items including apparel, calendars, games, and personalized birth commemoratives. Sharon also painted, stenciled, & faux finished the walls in her home, in some rooms creating her own stencils when she couldn't find just what she wanted. She was commissioned to create and execute custom stencils for the new office of a local insurance firm. When both of her ceramics teachers retired within the same year, she needed a new creative outlet & enrolled in art classes with Elaine Farmer, with whom she still studies, & also attends classes & workshops with other noted artists from the region whenever possible. In July of 2004 Sharon founded NH Plein Air Artists, an online group at Yahoo!groups whose purpose is to bring together plein air artists from the region for outings & discussion & to establish a database of plein air resources for the region. Sharon's paintings can be found in private collections throughout the USA, & also in Australia & Russia, as well as in exhibits in local art association galleries. |
